Artesian Time Tunnel
The Artesian Time Tunnel is an engaging and interactive experience located at the Cunnamulla Fella Visitor Information Centre. Visitors are taken on a chronological journey through time. Exhibits incorporate a number of themes including the Artesian Basin, the history of opal mining and local dinosaur discoveries.
Charlotte Plains Station
Charlotte Plains is a family owned and operated sheep station near Cunnamulla. Established back in the 1860s the property continues to run several thousand head of sheep. It boasts a historic bore, sunk into the Great Artesian Basin to a depth of 561m; a much needed water source for the property via a network of bore drains and piping.

This typical Aussie outback pub was built in 1927 and still retains many of its original fittings and décor. Browse through old town memorabilia and historic photos before sitting down to enjoy a great country style meal. Treat your group to some wonderful home style country cooking when travelling through Wyandra between Cunnamulla and Charleville.
Two Days in Cunnamulla
DAY ONE:
The turnoff to Charlotte Plains is around 42km east of Cunnamulla along the Balonne Highway. This family owned and operated sheep station was established back in the 1860s. Property owner Robyn Russell will board your coach for a guided tour of the station, home to Merino Sheep and Dohne Rams as well as the more recent Aussie White Sheep. See the historic bore, sunk into the Great Artesian Basin to a depth of 561m, wander their historic woolshed and enjoy lunch on the old homestead verandah. Continue on to Cunnamulla (around 30 mins) to the Cunnamulla Fella Visitor Information Centre. Join a self-guided tour of the Artesian Time Tunnel; Meet ‘Doug the Rigger’, view engaging audio visual displays and discover how the Great Artesian Basin was formed. While in the centre spend some time in the history museum and art gallery. Late afternoon follow the short River Walk to a viewing area over the river where you can see local birdlife and grazing kangaroos. Be sure to time your arrival at the viewing platform to watch the sunset. A perfect spot for sunset nibbles! (purchase drinks and nibbles platters in town – ask for suggestions at the Visitor Information Centre)
DAY TWO:
A fourth generation local from Out The Back Australia will board your coach for a guided tour of Cunnamulla. See the huge natural sand dunes and learn how they came to be. Gain an insight into the region’s first inhabitants, early pioneers and quirky characters. Discover the story behind the closure of the railway line to Cunnamulla. Drive west for around 45 minutes to Eulo dubbed the ‘Montville of the Outback’. See opals and art at the Telegraph House Gallery, pick up handcrafted leather goods or purchase some locally made honey. While in town you can visit the Artesian Mud Springs. Built up over centuries these mud springs were the original release valves for the Great Artesian Basin. Take a selfie with Kenny the life-size Diprotodon (giant Megafauna) found in the Eulo Area. Relax with a hearty pub lunch in the famous Eulo Queen Hotel before returning to Cunnamulla or continuing your drive to Thargomindah.
